Waste Management Division

As a way of responding to section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Lephalale Local Municipality provides regulated waste management services for the consideration of public health and environmental sustainability. Solid Waste Management Services are cardinal in the provision of integrated environmental management services. Provision of such services are guided by the National Environmental Management: Waste Act no 59 of 2008.Provision of integrated waste management services is also guided by the Integrated Waste Management Plan that is aligned with the National Waste Management strategy. The division is currently providing services to the following areas:
 Lephalale town
 Onverwacht
 Marapong
 Leseding
 Thabo Mbeki
 17 Villages

Solid Waste Management Functions:

1.Refuse Removal

Entails kerbside, backyard, and central collection of waste within the municipality.

2. Street Cleaning

Encompasses litter picking and to some extend street sweeping only in Lephalale town.

3. Landfill

Generated waste is disposed in the landfills where it is covered and compacted daily.

4. Waste Minimization and Awareness

Embraces the concepts of reduce,re-use,recycle,repair,repurpose and recover.Communication,awareness and education is the responsibility of the division. We ensure that people are aware of the impacts of waste on the environment and human health. The division attempts to divert all the recyclable in line with the targets of the National Waste Management Strategy

5. Compliance and enforcement

The division is enforcing waste management by-laws to the polluters and ensures compliance with the prescripts.
